PM Shehbaz Sharif Urges Transparency and Efficiency in Electricity Sector

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to enhance transparency in the electricity billing system and take robust measures to curb electricity theft. The directives were issued during a high-level meeting reviewing the performance of key Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
The meeting, which focused on Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), highlighted critical challenges and steps needed to improve operations, according to a statement issued by the PM Office.
The prime minister condemned the practice of overbilling, labelling it as unacceptable, and warned of strict action against officers found involved. He also emphasized the urgency of installing smart meters to address billing inefficiencies and ensure fair charges for consumers.
Expressing concern over delays in the appointment of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) for distribution companies, PM Shehbaz directed authorities to complete the process promptly and transparently. He underscored that all recruitments in the electricity sector must be merit-based, leaving no room for compromise on transparency.
